HEAT SOURCE

Some hobby stills come with a heat source; others are built to sit on top of a stove or hotplate. If you are purchasing one without a heat source, be advised that most commonly available hotplates that run on 110 current will have trouble boiling six gallons of mash, so you might look for a more industrial model from a restaurant supply store. Another option is a magnetic-induction hotplate, which is more efficient and can boil faster, but it doesn’t work with every still (the boiler must be made from a grade of steel that works with induction plates). You can also use direct flame from a gas stove, a propane burner, or a wood fire. However, as mentioned in the note about safety, it’s never a great idea to have an open flame near alcohol vapor, so use utmost caution—and certainly work outside—if you decide to go this route.
